This article may contain compensated links. See our full disclosure here

One of the most popular destinations in Italy, the five Cinque Terre villages are best experienced in the late afternoon and early morning after the day-tripping crowds have left. You should definitely stay overnight to experience their breathtaking beauty.

In this guide, we help you decide where to stay in Cinque Terre and give you our recommendations by budget and travel style. Book your Cinque Terre accommodation as early as you can in your trip planning as there is limited supply and the best places are snapped up quickly.

It is worth noting that most of the accommodation in the Cinque Terre is restricted to simple bed and breakfasts or private apartments and AirBnBs that often require a minimum 2 night stay. Hotels are generally small family-run establishments.

There is a selection of the best Cinque Terre accommodation across all categories below.

Where to stay in Cinque Terre

Everyone has a favorite Cinque Terre village and where you stay really comes down to personal preference and travel plans.

If you have a tight schedule, need to be close to one of the bigger train stations and love sandy beaches, Monterosso is the best choice. Here you will find the biggest range of accommodation of all the villages. Those looking for quiet seclusion should pick Corniglia, the smallest village with the fewest visitors.

Also, consider the amount of luggage you have and your ability to climb steep streets and multiple flights of stairs with and without the luggage. Monterosso is the flattest of the villages while Riomaggiore and Corniglia cover steep terrain.

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso is the largest village and a popular place to stay in the Cinque Terre thanks to its wide sandy beach. There is a broader range of accommodation options than the other villages and you will also find more restaurants and things to do in the evening. If you’re interested in seeing the villages by sea then you’ll find that many Cinque Terre boat tours depart from Monterosso.

The last village when you travel north towards Genoa, the train station at Monterosso is also a handy transit point for your onward journey. This is the flattest of the villages so a good choice if you have a lot of luggage or have some mobility issues.

Riomaggiore is typical of the medieval villages of the region. Its colorful Case Torre – tower houses – cling to the clifftops and offer stunning views of the Ligurian Sea and coastline.

The most southerly village, it is often the first stop for visitors to the Cinque Terre with visitors rushing through to get to the next town. It is there because Riomaggiore is at its most beautiful at dawn and dusk when the crowds have left for the day. Then you can swim at the small stony beach and gaze up the ancient castle to complete the romantic picture.

The town is built around one main cobbled street on a very steep incline so probably not the best choice for those who have trouble walking up and down hills. Visitors and locals gather in the restaurants and cafes until late in the evening and it is the best town to stay at if you are looking for nightlife during your stay on the Cinque Terre.

Unfortunately, this does happen, especially if you are visiting between May and September.

If this is the case, we recommend staying at nearby Portovenere (pictured above) or Levanto, both lovely towns close to the Cinque Terre villages. La Spezia is another option if you want to stay close to the Cinque Terre. You can easily catch the train or ferries along the coast and enjoy discovering towns a little off the well-worn path as well as the famed Cinque Terre.
